So It is Back to Work After We Dodged a Big Bullet

I did not have anything to report on the 4th and 5th because we did not have school for those two days. Seems that we were under a threat of being hit by Hurricane Hanna. And Grand Bahama had certainly learned its lesson from Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne which gave the island of Grand Bahama a one, two punch in 2004.

In fact it appeared as though we were in for the same scenario again, as Hurricane Hanna was being followed closely by Hurricane Ike. But as luck or divine intervention would have it, Hurricane Hanna downgraded to a tropical depression before reaching our shores and only dumped some rain on us. And Hurricane Ike changed its projected course completely and by-passed us. Now I probably shouldn't be celebrating because the islands that were hit by this powerful hurricane were completely devastated. But I know what it is like to be without electricity for twenty-four days and not be able to cook a decent meal, and have to resort to using scrubbing board to wash clothes, and suffer in the heat of the still night while mosquitoes buzzed all around you. Those are memories that I will never forget, and so while I am sorry that places like Great Inagua , Cuba and the Turks and Caicos islands were visited by this unwelcomed guest I am glad he did not darken our shores.

So today, Monday, it was back to work for me. Today I had to go around to all of the classes and confirm a time for each class to have its Library Time. I was not looking forward to this task because invariably there is the one teacher who wants you to accommodate him/her so that they can: 1. have two "free" periods back to back, 2. have a "free" period everyday, 3. have a "free" period right after morning break or lunch so as to enable them to go off campus and do whatever. So I was not looking forward to this task. And of course while I waited for the other speciality teachers to slot in their times, one of the P.E. teachers had still not given some of the teachers their time for P. E.

So after finally seeing all the teachers and typing in all the information onto my schedule I had to go and revisit some teachers to change their day or time. After all that running around I was looking forward to sitting at my desk and catching my breath. So you can imagine my surprise when I was about to leave the library to go in search of some water only to find a class waiting outside the door. I had no longer than twenty minutes before confirmed a day and time with that class's teacher when she pounced on the opportunity to have a "free" period and sent them to me. What made the whole situation so ridiculous was the in spite of fact that the allotted time for this class is immediately following the morning break, I had to end up taking the entire class for a bathroom break.

And the other teachers from that grade level seeing me taking this one class all sent to ask whether they would be having class today. I informed them all that they would have their classes next week.

Considering the kind of day that I had today it might have been good to have had some effects from Hurricane Ike to not have to go to school. But come to think of it, nahhh.
